Taigh Chearsabhagh print workshop and dark room offers artists the facilities they need to produce their work.

The workshop is part of a thriving Arts Centre and Museum, the focus for creative and cultural activities in the Uists.

As well as a museum, gallery, events room and workshop spaces, a cafe and shop are also housed in the building. Accommodation in the form of a self-contained flat is also available for artists to rent at £100 per week or £75 per week for two people sharing.

This is the only print workshop in the Outer Hebrides and Skye.

Its location, on the most westerly inhabited island in Scotland provides a dramatic and inspiring setting.

The island of North Uist is easy to get to. A daily flight from Glasgow to Benbecula takes one hour. Alternatively you can travel by ferry from Skye or from Oban to South Uist.

Acrylic Resist printmaking

Many chemicals regularly used by printmakers are classified as hazardous and some are suspected carcinogens.

Artists worldwide have expressed genuine concern about the risks to their health, that of others and the environment. There is now a move to recognise these risks, to take adequate precautions to eliminate or minimise them and to find alternatives to solvent-based systems.

In 2003, with assistance from Alfons Bytautus of Edinburgh Printmakers,we started utilising safer etching systems - getting rid of hazardous chemicals and solvents used in the technique of etching.

The Printmaking facility now employs an Acrylic-Resist Etching technique. This encompasses a range of techniques using waterbased etching resists. These resists are easy to use, clean up with water and are amazingly versatile.
