In June 1997 artist Chris Drury spent a month in North Uist building "Hut of the Shadow". The work has proved to be enormously popular with the many people who visit. Its sucess can be attributed to many factors: the skill of the artist, its location, sensitivy to the surrounding landscape and locally, community involvement, which has given people a sense of ownership through their participation and meeting with the artist. Since 1996 seven exciting and unique artworks have been located throughout the islands. The Mackerel and High Tide, Low Tide are situated along the same shore line, but are quite different and further along the coast the fascinating camera obscura blends traditional forms with the unexpected. The Roadends project involved four artists and four different communities. The communities provided a location, ideas, and in many cases, a tremendous amount of assistance. The project set out to widen people's experience of art in the environment, while encouraging people to visit some of the beautiful and less-visited parts of the island.
