Sanctuary by Roddy Mathieson

Roddy Mathieson's design for his sculpture related to elements within the landscape of Locheport. The bronze cast piece echoes the flight of swans which regularly gather on the lochs nearby. The shapes of boat ribs are also apparent. Patinated with sea water, the form has taken on a rich tourquoise green.

Preparatory work on the site and installation required the help of many people in the community and assistance from local companies.

The site marks the end of the Locheport road and the start of the walking route to Burrival and Eaval which dominate the surrounding landscape.

In 2007 the sculpture had to be relocated due to the proximity of building work. the work was successfully relocated to, according to the artist, an even better location on the other side of the road with more of a relationship to Loch Obisary and more visible against the skyline from the road. In addition a small companion piece 'Gael Force' was positioned on an ancient navigation cairn on the tidal island at NF 891 633.

Part of the Roadends Project 1998-2000
The Roadends project involved four artists and four different Communities. The communities provided a location, ideas, and in many cases, a tremendous amount of assistance. The project set out to widen people's experience of art in the environment, while encouraging people to visit some of the beautiful and less-visited parts of the island. The project was funded by The Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund and Western Isles Enterprise.
