Calanais as Cosmology: what can we infer about how the builders of Calanais saw time and space?
We are delighted to welcome Ian McHardy to Taigh Chearsabhagh to share his insight and extensive knowledge of the Calanais Stones, with a talk in Gallery 2 on Saturday 28th February, 2pm.
The talk is free to attend but spaces are limited so should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. We will also be live streaming the event. Please register below if you would like to receive the Zoom link, which will be emailed to you an hour before the talk commences.
Ian McHardy has been a professional archaeologist for 25 years and has worked on archaeological projects in Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, and travelled in many more. He first became involved with research projects in Lewis in 2000, after which he fell in love with the island and has since moved to live and work there. Gaining a post-graduate Master’s degree in archaeology from UHI during Covid, his work has included academic research, commercial archaeology, community archaeology and authoring books and articles. Long before becoming an archaeologist, he became fascinated by Calanais. ‘Contemplating Calanais’, his fantastic guide to the Callanish Stones, was published by the Islands Book Trust in 2024.
This event is offered in conjunction with Metaphysical Cosmologies by Meg Rodger, currently on show in Galleries 1 + 2 in Taigh Chearsabhagh, which explores our relationship with the universe from the standing stones at Calanais to present day cutting edge astronomy. This work evolved as a result of a RSA digital residency with Uist Film and a period of research and development funded by Creative Scotland including a week as artist in residence at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh in February 2025.
