Then and Now

A lot has changed, but small links remain. How we farm and socialise as a community is increasingly changing. Today, even with technology, we seem to be actively trying to reconnect with each other on a fundamental level, holding on to old traditions while coming to terms with the new.

Scottish islands still hold a sense of community, which is evident today and is often seen through how we work the land. Through recent inspiration from UistFilm’s freshly digitised archive 8mm film from the FAODAIL | FOUND Outer Hebrides Archive Film project, artist Yasmin Davidson has compiled inspiration from old film still images alongside her modern-day life images. Visually preserving the films through painting has developed into a need to treasure the history of our islands.

Then and Now is Yasmin Davidson’s latest exhibition of paintings, free to view in the Cafe Gallery from 28th July to 4th October, Monday to Saturday 10 am – 4 pm. All works are oil paint on canvas and are available for sale.

Yasmin Davidson was born in Dundee and grew up in the city. She studied Fine Art at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, graduating in 2013. Davidson has lived in Canada and travelled extensively across the United States. She moved to North Uist in 2019 and now lives and works on the Isle of Berneray, regularly exhibiting work with the Uist Arts Association and in galleries across the Western Isles.
