Our Poetry Evenings at Taigh Chearsabhagh have started up again after the summer break and we are delighted to welcome poet John Glenday to our next gathering. Please join us in Taigh Chearsabhagh on Thursday 16th October, at 7.30pm, to hear John read a selection of his work.
John Glenday is one of Scotland’s foremost prize-winning lyric poets. His themes cover the sea, the sky; light and its absence; the spirit in the secular age; our natural and human ecologies, how they interact, and the states that arise from the simple contemplation of the earth. He is also a wonderful poet of familial and romantic love, as well as a sly humourist and satirist.
John is the author of four collections. ‘The Apple Ghost’ (Peterloo Poets 1989) won a Scottish Arts Council Book Award; ‘Undark’ (Peterloo Poets 1995) was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and ‘Grain’ (Picador 2010) was shortlisted for both the Ted Hughes Award and the Griffin International Poetry Prize. His most recent collection, ‘The Golden Mean’ (Picador 2015) was shortlisted for the Saltire Scottish Poetry Book of the Year.
There’s no need to book ahead for the poetry reading, just come along and enjoy the evening. This event is free, with refreshments are provided, though donations are welcome. Our monthly poetry evenings are very sociable, informal and convivial. Anyone can bring poems on a chosen theme to share with the group or simply come along and enjoy listening to poems being read aloud. We also have visits from some of the best poets writing in Scotland today. Keep an eye on our website for future listings.
John will also be running a Writing Workshop in Taigh Chearsabhagh on Friday 17th October, from 10.30-12.30. The workshop is free but spaces are limited so booking in advance is essential, via our website.
And a save the date for your diary! Scotland’s new Makar, Peter MacKay, will be reading his poems on Wednesday 19th November at 7.30pm, as part of Taigh Chearsabhagh’s Book Week Scotland celebrations. If you would like to support our continued programming and enable us to keep offering free events, please consider making a donation to Taigh Chearsabhagh.
