Talk: The Sound of the Sea

In conjunction with the launch of The Sound of the Sea exhibition in the Cafe Gallery, artist Bronwyn MacKenzie will present a talk on their practice, on Saturday 11th July, 3pm. This event is free, no need to book in advance. All are welcome to come along and hear more about the development of the work.

The Sound of the Sea is a research project aiming to highlight how the sea can be understood through fluid mechanics.

In collaboration with Jack King at the University of Manchester, Taigh Chearsabhagh have commissioned visual artist Bronwyn MacKenzie to produce new artwork. The practice explores the intersection of art, science, and natural systems through drawing, sound, and technology. Created for Sound of the Sea, the drawings translate wave and environmental data from the Outer Hebrides into physical marks, revealing patterns of movement, energy, and change within the surrounding waters.

This is presented alongside The Listening Pools – an installation that uses seawater and underwater field recordings to create a direct, tactile connection between body and ocean. Specially commissioned music composed by Ollie Mills provides a soundtrack to the exhibition. Sounds of the Sea is an immersive 15-minute musical suite inspired by the stark beauty of the shorelines of the Outer Hebrides and the scientific study of the movement and breaking of waves.

The Sound of the Sea launches with an opening preview on Friday 10th July at 7pm, and is free to visit in the Cafe Gallery, Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm, til 29th August. If you would like to support our continued programming and enable us to keep offering free events and exhibitions, please consider making a donation to Taigh Chearsabhagh.
